Sandy start to June (4 Jun 2012)

Apologies for a tardy update! We had a beachy time last event on June 4th, learning about pitching and the sand shot.

Many golfers get demoralized at the thought of hitting their ball out of the bunker, but it really is one of the easier up and down shots from around the green (providing that the ball isn't plucked or the bunker's lip isn't resembling a Waikiki wave, of course!). You don't even have to actually hit the ball!

Yes, it is almost as easy as the pros make it looks... as long as you remember to not ground your club in the hazard, open the club face wide and open your stance (the club face faces the target, and you line your body up to the left of the target if you are a right-hander), and have fun splashing out the sand an inch or so behind the ball.

Sand shots really are a blast! They pop right on to the green and do the cool little backspin check after a hop or two, so you can fly the ball almost to the hole much of the time. And if the sand in the bunker is particularly light, you might even get sand in your hair and collar and maybe even in your shoes! Remember to rake the bunker after you are done playing, though. Leave it as you found it or better. Not everyone likes to hit their ball out of someone else's shoe print!

Spring is a wonderful golfing time in San Diego County. Come out and join us at our next event on June 18th (3-5PM) at Cottonwood GC!
