2012 Season is here!

Hello everyone!

I have been working on the new 2012 Girls Golf schedule, and getting ready for the 2012 season! I've done some revamping and made some new changes to the program that I think everyone will really like!

This message is to let you all know that the Saturday Family clinics will now be the Monthly SUNDAY Girls Golf family clinics!! We will meet at the Cottonwood golf driving range from 3-4:30pm and our first one will be this Sunday afternoon, January 29.

Remember, all girls golf members are cost-free at the Sunday family Clinics. Adults fee is $10 & non-member kids $5! You get 90 mins of golf balls and my undivided attention! Happy one putts!

Hello Everyone and Gobble Gobble!!

I have some news for everyone that will hopefully be exciting and fun for all!

Beginning December 3rd, I will be facilitating a Girls Golf Family Clinic at Cottonwood GC.

At first, I just wanted to offer a winter off-season family program for our members to keep everyone out there practicing their swings...... and it may just be that.... however I am prepared to keep it going throughout the spring and new 2012 Girls Golf program season if you all would like to have family golf clinics specifically for Girls Golf members and their families on Saturday afternoons.

Time: 3:00 - 5:00pm

When: Two Saturdays a month on the Range or Short Game Area
Price: Members are FREE

Participating Adults $10.00

Participating Kids $5.00

This is open to friends and families of Girls Golf members.

Crazee Dazee (3Oct2011)

Hey LUGGers!

Crazee Dazee was quite a dazzlingly crazy meet with lots of crazadelic games and dazzling displays of both craze and skill on and around the Cottonwood GC short game practice area.

Team Bumble Bee, I'm afraid, lost most of their members 3/4 of the way through the games, leaving the Queen Bee (none other than Coach mary) swarmed over by the enthusiastic mass of Lady Bugs. The literally crazee event finished in quite an impressive obstacle course challenge with the final match up of the buzzled 2 C's: Crystal v Cheyenne. A good race that saw both finishing as winners, one more than the other depending on different points of view...

Did I mention that it was a rather crazee dazee day?

Anyhow! Our final event of the year is just a few days away on Monday October 17th from 3:30-5:30PM. Please bring all of your golf clubs, wear athletic shoes, and sunscreen!

Upcoming Bake Sale (Sat Sept 24th at 9AM)

Autumn is almost here and we only have a couple of events left this season. With reduced funding for the program we have been working extra hard to keep the EC LUGG running this year. To help balance our budget, we are having a bake sale this Saturday (September 24th) morning at Cottonwood Golf Course from 9AM-Noon.

Come out and help support our program. Our moms are the best bakers in town!

Our next event will be Crazee Dazee on Monday October 3rd from 3:30-5:30PM.

Summer Camp Beginneth (1Aug2011)

Hello everyone!

Our summer camp kicked off to a good start with a sizzling session of putting practice on Monday afternoon. Everybody got one-on-one green time with Coach Mary as we learned the basics of the putting stroke and the art of always giving ourselves the best chance of making a putt.

Summer camp continues for the next two weeks at Cottonwood GC from 3-5PM Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Come out and join us if you can!

The heat and prior summer engagement kept many of us away from the July 25th meeting, though we did get to meet 2 new members and a guest who had a bit of fun on the range with Coach Mary before we all went inside to watch the first showing of this year's Movie Rock Stars Day music video. Here it is!

Thanks to everyone who participated and to Coach Mary who provides us with another original music for the video. Each of our participating members will be getting their own copy of the DVD, of course, and the clip (along with other previous clips) are available for viewing at our Youtube channel.

Our annual two-weeks summer camp begins next week, running from 3-5PM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We meet as usual at the Cottonwood GC driving range. Look for our new girls golf tent on the right end of the range. Please remember to bring golf clubs and wear athletic shoes to each meeting!

Hello Luggers!

We hope summer has started well for everyone. The Lugging staff have been busy preparing for the upcoming summer events. We next meet at Cottonwood Golf Club on Monday 25 July between 3:30-5PM for the release party of this year's music video. All EC LUGGers will get their own DVD copy of the show (it makes for a good nostalgic memorabilia once you get older, and if not, you can always use a chic and sleek spare drink coaster, ay?).

Our Summer Camp Golf Clinics will be held from 3-5PM on August 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12. Please be sure to come equipped with athletic shoes and golf clubs. Coach Mary is looking forward to showing you how to properly swat the dimples of the little white ball while looking graceful doing it.

Bake Sale Fundraiser (30 May 2011)

The air tasted like brownies at Cottonwood Golf Course as the El Cajon LUGGers set up shop to sell their baked goods to hungry golfers last Monday and raise fund to keep this non-profit group going.

We were very heartened by the generosity of many. Our supply of delicious bread loafs, cookies, rice crispy cakes, and brownies never ran dry and many generous golfers even made donations while turning down the sweet.

It is always great to have friends, especially ones that step out from the shadow to help you in time of needs when they don't have to. Our most sincere thanks to all for your participation, contribution, and support to the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program of El Cajon!

Our last regular event for the upcoming Monday (June 6th) is the 'Bring A Special Guest' day. Bring anyone you'd like. No restriction applies! We meet, as usual, at the Cottonwood GC driving range from 3:30-5:30PM. After that, please check our schedule for our summer camp dates.

Movie Rock Star Day (23 May 2011)

The greens were alive with the sound of music...

LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of El Cajon - Movie Day 2011

... or something like that on this year's Movie Rock Star Day. We rocked the range, spud-jumped through the short game practice area, rolled the balls through the green, and hit many good shots over Cottonwood GC's intimidating creek, all while being pestered by the coaches' many intruding cameras. (That's what rock stars have to deal with these days). Now the films are in the can and this year's EC LUGG music video should be done in a few weeks.

In the immediate future, however, is our Bake Sale Fundraiser! Come and join us at Cottonwood Golf Club in El Cajon from 9AM-1PM on Monday May 30th. Those wanting to contribute baked goodies to the sale may also drop them off at the golf course during business hours on Sunday. We are grateful for all contributions!

Best Ball Scramble (16 May 2011)

Last meeting was another fun afternoon spent on the course for LUGGers and coaches alike. First off, congratulations to Jenna and Cheyene on receiving their new set of golf clubs, generously donated by Inbee Park, one of our program's benefactors. Since the EC LUGGers formed a bit over a year ago four of our LUGGers have benefited from Ms. Park's special program, and they are busy putting their equipment to good use!

We teamed up in foursomes and went out for a few holes of scramble; everyone hit from the group's best shot location. Everyone did their best to contribute to the team effort while also observing all of the game's etiquette and rules.

The afternoon rushed by and we are another week closer to the upcoming Bake Sale Fundraiser! In the immediate future, however, is Movie Rock Star Day (Monday May 23rd). Be sure to look hip and rockadelic for the camera next Monday!

Mother-Daughter Day (9 May 2011)

On our Mother-Daughter event we did girls bonding - 21st century sport jocks style...

It was a free-wheeling fun afternoon with moms and daughters (and even a dad) outside hitting balls on the range, putting on the wacky putt-putt course (courtesy of our wacky coaches), hitting giant croquet balls on the lawn and playing a few holes on the course.

Fast, Safe & Courteous (2 May 2011)

As the weather turned positively summerly in Rancho San Diego there was hardly anything better for outdoorsy kids to do on a Monday afternoon than to spend it on a green golf course, chasing after the dimply little ball in the fastest, safest, and most courteous manner!

The course was a bit crowded, of course, so we had to improvise our round a bit. We played timed-alternate ball with emphasis on speed without forgetting course rules and etiquette. Most of the LUGGers saved their good hits for the real course and their slew of good shots helped kept the pace up. By the end of the round most of us had even gotten better at knowing where to position ourselves and our golf bag/cart in order to save time in between shots.

We also got to practice pitching over a bunker in the short game practice area. It is challenging refraining from making a full swing when having to hit over something like a big sand trap, but an easy little swing usually produces better shots indeed!

'Mother-Daughter Day' is our next event on May 9th at Cottonwood Golf Course. Don't forget to bring moms!

Golf Egg Hunt (25 April 2011)

There were many golf eggs left around Cottonwood GC on the day after Easter for the LUGGers to poach as they played a few holes last Monday. We walked past a few donkeys, ducked a few chirpy acorn woodpeckers, skipped along with a few rabbits and even spotted a few golfers on the golf course, but the giant colored eggs-laying Easter bunny remained too elusive to spot (perhaps it was disguised as the coaches!).

The eggs proved rather difficult to cook properly, though when crisply cracked they spilled some goodies of their own. Aside from chewy candies held in some, many hatched magical coupons redeemable for more goodies from Coach Mary at the end of the round. Some went home with an armful of colored golf balls while others got loaded up on school supplies and candies. It was a lot of fun for practically everybody involved.

Our next event (on Monday May 2nd) is the 'Fast, Safe & Courteous Event'. Please bring golf clubs and wear athletic shoes and meet at the Cottonwood driving range at 3:30PM as usual!

27 Shot Challenge (18 April 2011)

The weather changed and so did our plan. Our 'Note in the Hole' game was postponed for a week as we instead worked on a few things and completed the 27 holes challenge at the range before closing the day playing a 9 hole "up & down" game chipping and putting on the green.

Much of the session was spent on completing the 27 shot challenge where we tried different concentration technique while hitting golf shots in order to see which works best for each of us. Some did really well visualizing the shot and some preferred counting or humming a tune as we hit the ball. Pop, went many weasels in our head, but luckily everybody stayed in tune through out the challenge.

Pre-shot routine.

One of the secrets to playing consistently good golf is, of course, having a consistent pre-shot routine that allows you to get into the playing mindset where you focus on your shot and then execute it the same way every time. At last week's event, we introduced doing most of our shot-planning and thinking in the 'think box' a few paces behind the ball, then only focusing on creating the shot when you move into the 'play box' as you address the ball. Have a look at a few successful golf professionals' pre-shot routines.

We each have to develop our own pre-shot routine that give us confidence! But you can see from the video how the elite golfers do a few basic things in common. They take their practice swings while they are in the 'think box' behind the ball, and once they move into the 'play box' they either play the shot very quickly or they back off back into the 'think box' again if something doesn't feel right (see Padraig Harrington in the video).

Aside from really helping you concentrate better when playing on the golf course, having a pre-shot routine also makes you look like a cool professional. That never hurts!

Golf Basics for Beginners 2: Pitching

Pitching:

We were also introduced to pitching during the last meeting. Pitching refers to the short and high shots we hit with our pitching wedge (PW), lob wedge (L), or sand wedge (SW) from close around the green. This is not a full-swing shot.

Like the chip shot, we want to choke down on the club a little. Unlike the chip shot, we place the ball in the middle of our stance or a little forward of it (for higher shots), and we will allow the wrists to set on the backswing (so that the clubhead can go higher than our hands) and the same thing on the downswing so that we finish with the club pointing toward the pin or upward. The pitch shot is the first half of a full swing.

Swing drill:

You can practice your golf swing even if you don't live near a golf course! Here is a good swing drill you can practice in your living room using nothing but a golf club (you can use a long stick if you don't own a golf club, even!).

The key is to stand as if you are addressing a golf ball, pick a spot to stand in for the ball and keep your eyes on it until well into your follow-through. It is okay for the head to move a little from side to side, but you want to keep the spine angle you have at address through out the swing rotation. Turn your shoulders and hips and keep the rotation as fluid as possible finishing facing your target!

Golf Basics for Beginners 1: Grip & Alignment

Golf is a much easier game to try to tame when you start off with good swing basics, and the most basic of any golf swing is the way you grip the club! There are a few different ways of gripping the golf club. The three most effective gripping styles are:

Overlap (Vardon) Grip: With the little finger of the right hand (for right-handed golfers) placed on top of the groove between the index and middle finger of the left hand. This is sometimes called the 'Vardon' grip after Harry Vardon, the English golf professional who invented it. This is the most widely used grip since it encourages the using of the two hands as one unit while also allowing the right hand leverage for extra power.
Ten Finger (Baseball) Grip: Is the most athletic gripping style that allows for a lot of power, but usually at the expense of being able to consistently use both hands as one unit. It can be the best grip for golfers with small or weak hands, however.
Interlock Grip: Is the opposite of the Ten Finger Grip in that it promotes consistent use of both hands as one unit (good for control of ball path and flight) even though it doesn't allow much use of hand for extra power.

Whichever grip you use, be sure to rest the club at the base of your fingers rather than in the palm of your hands!

Alignment:

One hard thing about golf is that we do not have direct line of sight of our club-path and the target. We are hitting the ball while standing to its side! So when you line up your shot, it is best to first stand behind your golf ball and picture in your mind's eyes a straight line that runs from your ball all the way to your target (this is your 'target line'). Try to pick out something on the ground that lies on that line a foot or two in front of your ball (we call that our 'intermediate target'). Walk up to the ball and take your stance aiming the club-face at the intermediate target. Imagine the line between your ball and the intermediate target as your 'target line' and lining your feet up parallel to it.

In this photo, Coach Mary has lined herself up toward the red flag on the driving range (the wind was blowing from right to left, so she is aiming a bit to the right of the flag to compensate for that). The blue line is her target line, with the intermediate target being a white tee (in the yellow circle) that happened to be on that line. She then lined up her body line (orange lines) parallel to the target line. Now she is set to hit the ball!

How do you aim your club-head as you stand over the ball? Look down at the leading edge of your club-face (highlighted in red in the illustration). The club-head is 'squared' to the target line when its leading edge is perpendicular to it (the middle photo).

Blind Holes (11 April 2011)

Great turn out for last Monday's 'Blind Holes' round at Cottonwood GC. The weather was perfectly sunny and mild. The birds were singing (and the ones that weren't singing were busy pecking holes into the cottonwood trees along the course). Great weather for golfing!

The game of the day was 'Blind Holes', of course. Sneakily educational Coach Mary went about posting instructions on the tees and greens on the back nine of Ivanhoe course before hand. And each LUGGer had to comply to the posted instruction through out each hole they played. The instructions were all meant to enable our budding golfers to explore the various dominant sensory modes of thinking that worked best for them during a golf round. Some are quite counter-intuitive.... like this:

If you wonder what this has to do with golfing mind-set, try it and see. Sometimes it helps to focus on doing a task so much that one doesn't have time to worry about things one shouldn't worry about on the golf course - swing mechanics being a chief example, of course.

Since each of the LUGGers are their own individuals, some preferred one blind hole instruction over the others, though it doesn't hurt to explore them all. After all, how do you know what works best for you if you haven't tried all the various ways first?

Our next event is similar to the last. We meet, as usual, from 3:30-5:30PM at the Cottonwood GC driving range on Monday April 18th for our 'Note in the Hole' event!

3 Ring Circus (4 April 2011)

Last week we had a circusy good time learning the chip shot on the range and the practice greens. Practicing chip shots on the range was trying, of course. So much room, so little swing!

But golf is the game of getting the ball into the cup with the least number of strokes rather than a game of mindless ball-striking... And chipping is, aside from being a great help in making good score even when missing the green, fun!

The trick to chipping, of course, is to always have control of the club face. A good chipper chokes down on the club and chips with a putting stroke - always keeping her hands ahead of the club-head through impact. A little hop, then the ball rolls the rest of the way into the hole. And, voila! A par is saved!

After some practice on the range we had a fun hour navigating the "3 Ring" obstacle course Coach Mary set up in the practice area. Touchy putting holes followed by feel-developing ball tossing stations, balance wobble boards & pods course, and chipping holes. Topping it off, the LUGGERs got to vent off at the smiling clown pinata that went 'poof' after a few good slugging swings with a pitching wedge - deploying a shower of candies from its swinging legs. A sweet reward after two sunny hours on the golf course!

Bring A Friend Day (28 March 2011)

Hello! Hello!

Our 2011 season kicked off to the welcoming dry and warming weather at Cottonwood GC Monday. We had a good turn out for this early in the year and spent some quality time both on the range and on the putting green.

Putting proved a touchy aspect of golf, though it got easier as Coach Mary showed the group some very cool putting drills.

Some of us did better in judging how hard to hit a putt when our eyes are closed and some with our eyes wide open. Taking care to line up a putt and focusing on giving our stroke a good tempo helped, though. And many good putts were made despite of the obnoxiously twisty nature of the finishing 9 holes putting round.

The 2011 Season Is Almost Here!

Hello Everyone!!

First of all, I want to say that I am so excited for this new season of Girls Golf to begin!

For those of you who will be our newest members, welcome!!! I'm Coach Mary and I'm really looking forward to meeting each and everyone of you while having as much fun as we can on the golf course!

For you returning members, welcome back!!!! We had a lot of fun last year, and I have every intention of creating an even better golfing experience this season!

Michell (the blogmaster) will be posting more updates on our blog, The LUGGer's Log, for you, so be sure to take time and check it out whenever you get the chance. The LUGGer's Log is for you to stay informed, and to keep in contact! As well as check out whatever Michell tends to sneak onto her camera during the events of all of us.

Now with the proper announcement: We have 2 events that I want to make sure everyone is aware of.

First, of course, is our 1st Event on Monday March 28th, 3:30 - 5:30pm at Cottonwood GC. We will all meet on the driving range, where you will see the Girls Golf Banners. The Event is "Bring a Friend". So.... BRING A FRIEND!!

Normally, a guest can pay $10 to attend any of our events. However, for this first event, each guest will only be charged half the usual price ($5). This is an opportunity for anyone else who may like to join the Program and become members before we get the show rolling for the year. Besides, having a friend around always makes it more fun!

Last, but not least; I have free entry tickets for the LPGA KIA Classic which is being held at Industry Hills GC in Los Angeles area on March 24-27th. On Saturday, March 26th, I will be joining with my fellow LPGA Coaches and Tour Players for the LPGA Tour Junior Clinic at the KIA Classic.

Anyone who is interested in going to the KIA Classic on Sat March 26th should give me a holler. I can take 3-4 girls with me to the Tournament, and if any parents would also like to attend, let me know. If more than 4 girls would like to attend, maybe we can do a caravan. I have 8 free entries, so first come first serve with this one.

The holiday season is upon us. We LUGGing staff wish all our LUGGers a very happy and healthy holiday season filled with joy and laughter.

The 2011 EC LUGG annual registration will take place once again at Cottonwood Golf Course in El Cajon (Rancho San Diego) in late February. Specific dates and season schedule will be posted well beforehand, of course.

September Golf Clinic (20Sep2010)

Apologies for the lateness of this update. Time flies when you're having fun!

Our September golf clinic was even more fun than we planned it thanks to a good attendance record and essay-writing by Sierra and Alexa, who each earned a brand new set of golf clubs with a bag as 2010 recipients for "Golf Clubs Fore Girls presented by Inbee Park program" through the LPGA Foundation and

US Kids Golf.

The weather was good and we got to practice on the driving range as well as on the putting and chipping greens. With some luck we will have good weather for our next clinic on Monday October 18th, too.

Due to some schedule conflicts, we will not be participating in the Mother Goose Parade this year, so the next clinic (18 October) will also be our last event of the year.

Aside from the proper golf clinic we will also have a little spooky (Halloween-ish) farewell party to cap off the season ender. Please meet at the driving range at Cottonwood GC at 3:30PM (event ends at 5PM).

Time flies when you're having fun. And fun was what we had Monday afternoon at Cottonwood GC in El Cajon. Turn out was small enough that we decided to take off on Ivanhoe course and played a few holes of real golf instead of the usual range and short game practice.

It was the first real round of golf for some of our youngsters (and the first one in a long while for both coaches manning the clinic). Our LUGGers were reminded of a few golf rules:

- Honor and order of play: The player who shot the lowest score on the previous hole gets to tee off first. And the player whose ball is further away from the hole get to hit their subsequent shot first.

- Teeing area: On the tee box the player can place the ball anywhere in the rectangular area extending from the line between the tee markers two (2) club-lengths backward. You can stand outside of this area, but the ball has to be inside it.

Coach Mary was in a good mood and joined in on the fun playing along with just her pitching wedge, effectively wowing the crowd (a whole clan of acorn woodpeckers and what seems like a bustling population of ground squirrels included) with some creative shot-making.

Summer is here and, aside from the swimming pool, there is hardly a better outdoorsy place in El Cajon, California to spend an eventful afternoon than at Cottonwood Golf Course. At least we breezy LUGGers think so anyhow. So, in case you hadn't already marked it down on your calendar, be sure to join us for our next golf clinic on Monday August 23 from 3:30 - 5PM at Cottonwood GC driving range.

Why sit at home and let your hard earned golfing callus revert to its softy self when you can be out on the range beating up the little white balls (the right way, courtesy of watchful Coach Mary), in front of a gallery of inquisitive western blue birds (among other cutie creatures)? We look forward to seeing you!

Be sure to turn up in athletic footwear, please. Anything but the skating blades, the skiing boots, or the bowling shoes will do...

2010 Summer Camp Week 1

Our first summer camp had a rather slow but fun-filled first week last week. We suspect the rather overly ambitious first heatwave of the summer had something to do with it. Even the local birds were sweating!

The camp provide a great opportunity for young budding girl golfers to get hands on coaching by Total Approach Coach Mary on every aspects of the golf game. The usual ball-hitting sessions at the range and short game honing works around the practice greens are supplemented by inventive (and sneakily instructive) games and obstacle courses.

Championship & Banquet (28 June 2010)

The last Monday of June saw our final regular event of our first season!

All the skills we've learned in the past 3 months were well used by the EC LUGGers to navigate Coach Mary's challenging 18 holes short game tournament set up on and around the Cottonwood Golf Course's practice greens.

The LUGGers were grouped in to pairings and counted every stroke as they putted, chipped, and tossed their way through the course under the watchful eyes of the coaches, moms, and other bystanders of various species.

When the dust had settled and all the scores were tallied and signed for everyone gathered around at the clubhouse restaurant for the prize presentations and dinner banquet of tasty chicken fingers and fries.

Congratulations to Madison for winning our first championship and a set of golf clubs (graciously donated by the WSCGA Foundation) along with our runner ups; Alexia, Bella, Marilee and Tara, who each won a prize!

Father-Daughter Day (21 June 2010)

The EC LUGGers went co-ed for our Father-Daughter Day event with few granddads showing up to aid and abet the little (and not-so-little) LUGGers through Coach Mary's fantastic obstacle course relay race and 9 holes short game challenge course.

We started off at the shaded end of the driving range where, after a ball hitting session, the LUGGers and their granddads were grouped into different teams for the race. The balance pods were deftly navigated by most while the spinning disc proved quite tricky to manipulate by flat and full bellies alike. Patience was quickly learned by our youngest lasses at the ball tossing station, and the granddads really earned their cheers at the final ball striking station, scoring a ton of time-deduction by landing their pitch shot over the designated zone.

The short game challenge with rule-quizzes in the holes and chipping challenges on the pitching green went smoothly. It was a fun afternoon for both the LUGGers and their granddads, highlighting another great aspect of the game of golf - it allows for quality socializing time between family members (as long as we aren't counting the score or correcting the swings, that is).

Next Monday (June 28th)'s Eagle Division Championship & Banquet (register at 3:30PM with event running from 4-6PM) will be our last regular event of the year. The EC LUGG will take 2 weeks off before recommencing for our Summer Camp from July 12-23 (3-5PM Monday, Wednesday, Friday). We hope to see everyone next Monday for a proper wrapping of the El Cajon LUGG's first season!

Flag Day (13 June 2010)

The sun was shining bright on Flag Day as the EC LUGGers warmed up on the Cottonwood driving range after having picked up their LPGA Girls Golf membership kits along with a few other goodies.

A few swings were adjusted on the range before we all headed closer to the flag and spent the rest of the afternoon playing putting games with Coaches Mary and Pat on the east putting green. More putts were made in an hour on Flag Day than were made in many of the previous weeks, since our first putting game requires a one putt before the groups can rotate to another position.

The LUGGers' favorite putting game remains 'Freeze!', of course, though with fewer targets available this time around, our LUGGers took more time aiming and managed to knock off other players at a much faster rate than usual. Be careful challenging these girls to a putting game, folks... They are surprisingly deadly with their putter!

Our next event on Monday June 21 (registration on the Cottonwood GC driving range from 3:30PM with event running from 4-6PM) will be 'Father-Daughter Day.' See you and your dad (or grand dad) there!

Movie Release Day (7 June 2010)

Our turn out on Monday suffered a bit from a scheduling conflict with the 6th grade camp. Though that also meant that Coaches Mary and Pat were able to spend more time with our younger members on the range.

Coach Mary kept us all well trained along with entertained with her newest configuration of a timed relay obstacle course game under the shade of the range canopy. After having labored over the balancing pods, spinning plate, and some touchily precise ball tossing, the LUGGers were quite more keen on making every drive count instead of just random hitting. Quite a few good hits were made and Haley even earned a bonus time for the winning team after sending a particularly good hit well over the range drop off!

The main attraction of the day, however, was the official premiere of the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of El Cajon music video we shot on Movie/Rockstar Day at the Cottonwood Golf Club Restaurant. The video can be accessed online here.

Our next event on Monday June 14th is Flag Day! We will meet at the Cottonwood GC driving range at the usual time (3:30PM registration, event running from 4-6PM).

Memorial Day 9 Holes Scramble Fundraising Tournament (31May2010)

The weather was beachy and the long weekend (among other things) lured most of us away from the golf course by Monday, so our 9 Holes Scramble Tournament saw a smaller turn out than expected.

Things worked out for the best nonetheless and your curious coaches were grateful to use the extra time to finally finish up on editing the music video we shot on Movie Day a few weeks ago. We thereby gleefully replace the previously scheduled Special Guest Day on Monday June 7th with Video Release Party.

The group will meet at the usual time (3:30 PM registration with the event running from 4-6PM) at the far right end of the driving range at Cottonwood Golf Course. We will be working on full swing and balancing stations before removing to the clubhouse for the first screening of the music video!

Beach Party (24 May 2010)

Last Monday started off cool and cloudy enough to pass for a stray autumn morning, but luckily for us the sun showed up and brought the day back to the more comfortably beachy weather and the EC LUGGers were able to appear at Cottonwood GC in their Californian beach attire rather than in penguin suits (when we said 'beach attire' we really just meant stuff worn at beaches north of the Antarctic Circle!).
After signing in and demolishing Coach Mary's supply of healthy snacks, the LUGGers followed Coach Carol to the practice green for a hazardous afternoon in the bunker (also known as 'sand trap', though no golfer in their right mind would acknowledge the legitimate use of that jinxy word!).

The bunker, like bodies of water on the golf course, is, of course, an official golf 'hazard': one is not allowed to touch the sand with ones hand (testing the surface) or ground the club before one has played the ball completely out of the unfriendly place (Rule 13-4). Naturally, sand-castling, body-burrowing, sand-balls fighting, etc, were not in our play book, though that didn't prevent the resourceful LUGGers from having a very sandy blast in the bunker for much of the afternoon (after all, it really pays to really blow hard at the sand with the sand wedge to get the ball on top of it to fly right out of the mini Sahara while humming a Lady Gaga number to a crowd of enthusiastic audience).

By the way, did you know that 'bunker/sand trap' is trampa de arena in Spanish, ostacolo di sabbia in Italian, γκολφ in Greek, písečná překážka in Czech? (the French boringly just uses 'bunker' and the German dutifully calls it Der Sand)

Coach Pat was also on hand and presided over the putting green until the final half hour when everyone got together for a game of 'Freeze!' Coach Mary was everyone's favorite target though proved herself quite adept at evading incoming putts.

Movie Day (17 May 2010)

A good turn out for our Movie Day Monday! Most of the EC LUGGers turned up in very spiffy (and mostly pink) costumes, which of course, allowed them to avoid being re-outfitted by our fashionally-dysfunctional coaches.

Coach Mary even joined the fun in donning the Mad Hatter's top hat before assuming the day's directorial role and bossing us all around Cottonwood Golf Club's picturesque Ivanhoe course, creating many wonderful scenes for the camera.

Aside from hanging out and depleting the Cottonwood restaurant supply of popcorn and soda while they weren't posing for the camera, the LUGGers got to play a bit of speed-golf before settling in at the practice green, pitching a few shots over the tall-lipped bunker.

The music video of our outing is in the final editing process and should be available for viewing soon. In the meanwhile, though, our next event on Monday May 24th will be 'Beach Party!'

We will meet at the usual spot on the right end of the Cottonwood GC Driving Range (sign in from 3:30 - 4PM with the event running from 4-6PM) before moving to the practice green where we will learn how conquer the sand with our wedges.

Mother-Daughter Day (10 May 2010)

Time flies when you're having fun, and Monday's event flew like an Air France concord merrily streaking through the air with roars of mother-daughterly delight that were much easier on the ears (and the nerves) than the usual supersonic blast associated with such a flight.

The day started with a bit of a glitch, however. With the unexpected closure of the driving range, the group met at the putting green behind the tent pavilion. Word of the change in location didn't get around soon enough for many of our LUGGers to avoid the anxiety of showing up at the deserted range instead of the green, though. So, in case of future short-notice changes, please check the EC LUGG bulletin board on the left end of the Cottonwood GC clubhouse (between the restrooms) as you arrive to each event.

After a fun round of BrainGym excersizes, the group split into teams of 2 to 4 before taking turns navigating the Blind Holes game with Coach Mary Paulson on the green and going out with Coach Pat Beilke for speed golf - capped by a video session with Coach Jerry Heinz, who effectively turned the middle of the 18th fairway into a driving range for the groups.

Everyone had a blast in many real and figurative senses (thanks to a rather large water hazard running along both sides of the fairway). Moms were able to experience what their daughters have been doing at EC LUGG meetings so far, and daughters got to coach their moms around the putting green for a change. Hitting the balls on the golf course was fun, but getting the ball into the hole proved more challenging (one of the game's built-in curses, to be sure). Luckily, it is a lot easier to practice your putting at home than it is practicing the full swing. A few cats may object to being distracted from their mouse-chasing duty by the rolling little dimply ball, though hopefully the household furniture (along with household humans) will survive without a scratch.

Our next event on May 17th (meet at the right end of Cottonwood GC driving range at the usual time from 4 - 6PM, checking in from 3:30PM) will be Movie Day. Participants are encouraged to show up in a costume to dress up as their favorite movie star. We will be video taped doing what we do best (golf-related to various degrees). See you in the movie!

Fast, Safe & Courteous Event (3 May 2010)

The EC LUGGers welcomed the springy month of May Monday with the Fast, Safe & Courteous excursion onto the golf course for the first time this year.

After a swift, secure & civilized opening briefing by Coach Mary on the driving range the group split into two halves; one heading off for a three hole speed-golf play led by Coaches Pat Beilke and Petra Cole as the other half put their pitching wedges to good use on the range under Coach Mary's firing command. The two halves switched their tasks for the second hour.

The EC LUGGers proved very adept at rapidly paced but injury-free playing while observing complaisant golfing etiquette! The correct order of play was observed (the player whose ball is further from the hole goes first), the flag was attended to while golfers with long putt made their strokes, and everybody froze like vogue statuettes while a shot is being played.... Well, perhaps not quite in that frigidly well-petrified manner, but nobody was more disagreeably distracting than a stationary slumbering mouse would be when their playing partner was trying to play her shot, and that made for a very pleasant time on the golf course!
Having put three solid golf holes and many good pitching shots (and a few go at our customary balancing and ball tossing stations - the latter now done with eyes closed) under their figurative belt the group quite unanimously opted for a replay of the Fast, Safe & Courteous along with Note-In-The-Hole stints for our upcoming 'Mother-Daughter Day' get-together next Monday (May 10th). The group will once again meet up between 3:30-4PM (with actual event running from 4-6PM) at the far right end of Cottonwood GC driving range. Happy Mother's Day in advance!

To moms and daughters who are planning on joining us next week; come looking sharp, folks! There will be cameras involved.

Best Ball of Partners (26 April 2010)

The EC LUGGers' fifth event of 2010 went quite smoothly even with a busier schedule and a new lead instructor for the day. Coach Mary was at the Cottonwood driving range to get the group organized before letting Coaches Carol Lingle and Pat Beilke take over for the afternoon.

After everyone had put away their cell phones and followed a whirly round of warming up led by Bella, the LUGGers split into two groups with the Power Puff Girls (Cierra, Hayley, Jessika, Kristen, and Savannah) heading first to the practice green for 30 minutes of lag-putting games with Coach Pat; while the Woodstock Golfers (Madison, Bella, Marilee, and Tara) stayed at the range for half an hour of pitching and chipping through hoops, conducted by Coach Carol. Papa Doug and a few moms were also on hand to witness the budding golfers' facility with the golf club.

Safety rules were observed as usual. The golf clubs felt much safer with their heavy heads being lovingly held by the palms of the LUGGers' hands, whenever they weren't busy swinging the poor chunks of metal against the well beaten little white balls. The LUGGers also did well in taking turns and not approaching others who were swinging their clubs, ensuring that the afternoon rolled on without any occurrence more painful than a few sore feet (new lesson learned the achy way by new golfers: always wear athletic shoes to the golf course because boots really aren't easy on twisting feet!).

The groups switched and everybody had a few good half-swing pitches and distance-judging putts under their belt (it does pay to take time and have a good aim before hitting!) by the time we headed to the west putting green for the day's title activity; Best Ball of Partners. The LUGGers split once more to groups of 2 or 3 and deftly navigated 9 green-side holes played to specific instructions. Everybody breezed through the 'aim every shot' hole, but struggled a bit with the 'play each shot with eye closed'. The best score for each hole was counted and fabulously fun prizes were given as the event closed at 6PM (Congrats, Madison & Jessica!).

Our next event (3 May 2010), the Fast, Safe, & Courteous Event, will meet once again at the right end of the driving range at Cottonwood GC in El Cajon, CA.

Note In The Holes (19 April 2010)

The weather was worthy of bottles of sunscreen when the EC LUGGers made our first visit to Cottonwood GC's driving range on Monday afternoon.
After a proper warm up led by spry LUGGer Cierra, Coach Mary laid down the safety ground rules before introducing the concept of pitching using half swing and let the LUGGers loose trying to shoot their little white balls into either a blue net or a hoop 20 yards away. It is a bit tough trying to judge where half-swing is when many LUGGers are rather small compared to their clubs and haven't been swinging much aside from the previous EC LUGG events.

Pitching is quite simple once you've got some practice at it. Keep the leading arm (left arm for right-handers and right arm for lefties) straight and turn your shoulders back until the leading arm is parallel to the ground (with the club pointing straight up), then pivot your body back down and through the ball to finish with the back arm (right arm for right-handers and left arm for lefties) parallel to the ground. A few LUGGers did quite well and not only got a few balls through the net and the hoop but also knocked the latter right off its perches with their pitch, necessitating a dangerous venture by Coach Mary into the range to re-erect the gadget.

Thanks largely to our LUGGers' remarkable restraint from shooting even when unexpectedly presented with such a temptingly colorful moving target our head coach survived the trip and was able to then herd the group along to the chipping and putting greens for the day's flag event: 'Note in the Holes' obstacle course.

Nine stations were prepared with a balancing course, ball tossing stations, a swing-through station using napkin holders instead of golf balls, putting and chipping holes with a note in the cup asking about golf rules we had covered until now (i.e.; where the safe places to stand are while another golfer is playing her shot, who gets to play first (the best score from the previous hole and the person furthest away from the hole), etc.). Grandpa Doug was again on hand to help along with the coaches as the LUGGers safely navigated the course.

Blind Holes: The Ball's There Whether You See It Or Not!

Leaky El Nino rain clouds notwithstanding the third regular event of the El Cajon LUGGers went on mostly as planned on Monday April 12th. We had a few new faces along with returning 'veterans' showing up to put Cottonwood GC's west practice putting green to good use.

The afternoon actually started in the carpeted pavilion tent between the clubhouse and the putting green with Coach Mary leading the group in a routine of warm up and stretching exercises (essential things to do before playing any sport!). After everybody was loose and properly armed with a putter the EC LUGGers were introduced to the concept of lag putting.

This, of course, is a very useful golf practice that benefits beginners and old timers (hackers included) alike. Why three-putt when you can get the ball in the cup in two? Instead of trying to ram the ball into the hole and risk having a long second putt, a good lag putter aims instead to have the ball come to rest within two feet of the cup. Chances are good that many of the putts would go in, and chances are great that when they don't, you won't miss the short tap in for the second putt!

Naturally, Coach Mary didn't let the LUGGers learn just one skill when she could have them learn two or three at the same time and loving all of it. The ensuing obstacle course with balancing and ball tossing stations kept everyone busy as the moody gray clouds gave up their attempt to, in more ways than one, rain on the parade.

After a brief break punctuated by steaming cups of hot cocoa the EC LUGGers moved outdoor to the practice putting green to have a go at the 'bump and run' (see previous post for Coach Mary's demo video). The little technical section was followed by the main event, Blind Holes, where the LUGGers paired up and attempted to hole their shots blindfolded (guided only by their partner's instruction). Coaches Mary and Pat along with Grandpa Doug kept a close eye on our visually-deprived budding golfers, of course, and made sure that only golf balls (and not people) were hit.

The day ended on a colorful note when Coach Mary dumped buckets of brightly colored golf balls: yellow, orange, pink, and even some purple, on the putting green and announced that they are free for the taking providing that they are retrieved safely to their new owners' bucket via putting and/or chipping.

A golf ball derby was on and much innovative use of the putter and the pitching wedge was thought up by the LUGGers who had as much fun trading for specific color balls as they did in retrieving them.

Golf Egg Hunt: Rained Out Without Being Drowned Out

The Girls Golf of EL Cajon 'Golf Egg Hunt' event was unfortunately pseudo-rained out yesterday and will be combined with the next event, 'Blind Holes', next Monday (April 12th).

The coaches regret that the rain storm presented an unfavorable travel condition for our LUGGers to get to Cottonwood GC (where all our regular events are held). It was indeed raining when we arrived to set up the practice area, but then the wind blew through and took the leaky cumulonimbus clouds away. It actually turned out to be a pretty beautiful and dry (if a bit chilly) afternoon on the golf course!

Since no one was around to keep us coaches in line, we had a bit of fun ourselves practicing some bump and run chip shots around the green. To sort of make up for our escapades, Coach Mary gamely consented to be filmed demonstrating the shot our girls will be learning to play on April 12th instead...

Pretty handy around the green, isn't she? It is a really simple shot that is quite fun to play once you've got the hang of it. We marked the green with three markers: one where to hit the ball from, an elevated string to hop the ball over, and a flat blue marker (a bit hard to see here, so I x-marked where it was in the photos) about 1/3 way between the ball and the cup - the ideal landing zone.

With a narrow open stance (your toes will line up left of the target), grip down on the handle and let your arms hang comfortably over the ball. Lean forward with the hands to keep them ahead of the club-face, then make a small putting stroke through the ball - keeping your hands ahead of the club head until a bit after impacting the ball... then watch the eager little white ball hop 1/3 of the way to the cup and rolls the rest of the way in!

Bring A Friend Day (29 March 2010)

The EC LUGGers had our first official session Monday afternoon at Cottonwood GC. It was 'Bring A Friend Day', and the group was big enough to liven up the scene even though it was the first workday of the week. Coach Mary gathered the LUGGers over at the practice green soon after 4PM to start working on basic putting mechanics and distance judging before sorting the group into teams of two to practice holing out short putts and a playing with few other fun drills.

Assisting Coach Mary was Coach Pat Beilke, who drove all the way down from Carlsbad to be with us. After a brief water break everybody moved over to the west putting green for a testily fun duel with the obstacle course the mad golf coaches had thought up: 9 improvised putting holes (actually 6 putting holes and 3 balance and ball tossing stations) set to par 27. There is no telling how many of the EC LUGGers will one day walk on the inside of the roped out country club playing for millions on the LPGA Tour, but one thing for sure is many LUGGers sure can toss their dimply little white ball in a way that would make a softball coach salivate.
By the end of the day the group had learned a few things (aside from the fact that chocolate brownie bar and tangerines make for really great snacks in warm weather) like how to judge their putt and make good contact with the ball (and, hopefully, that the sound of the ball bouncing merrily against the inside of the cup after a well executed putting stroke is a really wickedly satisfying thing!).

And since we were all keen on joining the rank of the respectable seasoned golfers, a few basic course etiquette were also mentioned, of course, like:
1. Where to stand when another golfer is prepared to make her stroke (either opposite her front or away to her back.... and taking care that one's shadow is not visible to the person or on her presumed ball path)
2. The order of play (the person who shot the lowest score on the last hole gets to start first, and then the one whose ball is further from the hole gets to play the next shot first)

The good places to stand are were the orange circles are in the photo, taking care, of course, that your shadow doesn't fall across the player's line of putt (the imaginary blue line)

Everybody also got a little LPGA-USGA rules booklet as souvenir at the end of the obstacle course challenge. It might not be as good a read as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows or The Spyglass Cup are, but it has Snoopy on the cover and the rules it prescribes are quite a bit easier for us muggles to practice than Hogwarts homework magic is, so hopefully our EC LUGGers will know a few more golf rules from it when they show up for the next event, 'Golf Ball Egg Hunt', on April 5th from 4-6PM... I'm betting a chocolaty rabbit's ear that that will come in handy for scoring well next week!

LPGA-USGA Girls Golf (LUGG) of El Cajon is now officially operative

The El Cajon Chapter of LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program officially kicked off with the first anual Registration Day on Saturday March 13th at Cottonwood Golf Club east of San Diego. Registration table with the program’s brochure sign up sheets, schedule, and other related information was set up at 3 PM by Site Director/Lead LPGA Instructor/Designated Mother Hen/etc Mary Paulson, and her crew.

Enthusiastic local girl golfers and their moms started arriving to join the program shortly after 3PM and were very much looking forward to the program’s first event, Bring A Friend Day, on Monday March 29th at Cottonwood GC (event will run from 4-6PM).
